Best Mist Eliminators for Wet Machining

by James Lee, Industrial Designer

Your first choice for wet machine mist and smoke is a directly machine mounted electrostatic mist eliminator like the Mini M.E.  These compact electrostatic precipitators (ESP) are extremely easy to install and maintain.  In fact, they are self maintaining in most situations.  There are no ducts needed.  They suck the pollution out of the machine before it has a chance to escape the enclosure, and they drain recycled metalworking fluids back into the machine.  So inexpensive and eficient, you can afford to mount one to each machine center.

To mount a small ESP mist eliminator, you just need a six inch hole in the top of a mostly enclosed machine.  Just lay a ring of RTV sealant and bolt it on.  If you cannot make a hole on top for the mist eliminator to sit, a short duct can run from the side of the machine to wherever is a convenient location to install the mist eliminator.  Just keep ducting to a minimum.  If you are working with cast iron, highly ferrous material or something that makes small chips from an abrasive operation, you may need to use a media based mist eliminator.  But the majority of wet machining works great with electrostatic precipitation.

Filter media is the next best solution for wet machining coolant mist, though filter replacement and energy consumption makes it substantially more expensive than electrostatic precipitation.  Yet some people choose media mist eliminators for wet machining electrostatic based on initial purchase cost.  Smart buyers will look ahead and estimate filter replacement cost over the lifetime of the mist eliminator.  Electrostatic precipitators generally have no filter replacement and very little maintenance.  The main reason compact electrostatic mist eliminators such as the MistBuster and Mini M.E. are doing so well right now, is that they typically cost less than competitive media based mist eliminators over the period of one or two years.  A couple years of replacement filters alone can pay for the total cost of owning and operating a machine mounted electrostatic mist eliminator.
