Royal FilterMist Centrifugal Mist Separators

by James Lee, Industrial Designer

Efficiency - Oil mist from machine tools produces particles 0.5 to 10 microns in size.  Royal Filter Mist removes 1.0 micron and larger coolant mist particles.  Fine mist, smoke and gases will pass through into your production environment.  To address fine mist and smoke particles, a disposable media after filter is required.  A Royal HEPA filter can almost always be considered a necessary accessory.

Vibration is a common problem for centrifugal separators.  Due to the mechanics of the high speed, spinning centrifugal separation process, contamination buildup commonly causes pads, seals, bearings, and other parts to fail, which in turn causes the spinning drum to go out of balance, vibrate or shake.  The Royal mist eliminator addresses the vibration problem by using neoprene mounts that are intended to isolate vibration.  In addition, you need to follow a regular maintenance schedule for checking and replacing parts.  Here is a partial list for maintenance from the Royal FilterMist website.

...For safety purposes, it is necessary to periodically inspect the Royal Filtermist unit’s main components for wear or damage, especially if loud noises or vibration is present. Additionally, we recommend these simple maintenance procedures be carried out once a year:
  • Inspect and replace the motor mounts and torque-limiting straps if worn or damaged.
  • Inspect and replace silencer if necessary.
  • Remove drum and thoroughly clean. Inspect for any damage.
  • Replace or clean drum pads. (Sometimes the pads can be cleaned with soapy water. Remember, the pads are not filters so they don’t have to be perfectly white, but it is important that they are not packed with solid buildup which could cause vibration and wear problems.)
  • Replace lid seal.
  • Check all other accessories for wear and damage, ie: ducting, flange adapters, etc. Repair or replace as necessary.
  • Check all mounting fixtures such as stands and suspension kits for damage or signs of fatigue. Repair or replace as necessary.

Some aspects of this program may have to be carried out on a more frequent basis, depending upon the application. Applications which typically require more frequent maintenance are those in which very fine chips are produced, such as cast iron machining and grinding...
