Pedestal Mounted Mist Eliminators

An adaptation originally created to isolate mist eliminators from machines, pedestal mounting for smoke and oil mist eliminators lets you locate a small mist eliminator in a convenient position on a pedestal in the event that it can not be mounted directly to a machine enclosure.  Depending on filtration technology and product quality, a pedestal stand may be essential when pairing an oil mist eliminator to certain machine applications.  Yet other oil mist eliminators can be directly mounted for the same applications. Convenience of Pedestal Mounted Mist Eliminators

by James Lee, Industrial Designer

Pedestal mounting was originally a quick fix for a common problem with the centrifugal separator technology.  Because the contaminated air stream must flow through moving parts and spinning chambers, centrifugal separators frequently went out of balance.  It started with subtle vibration.  Left without disassembly and thorough cleaning, vibrating turned into shaking.  Tooling that required any precision was affected, creating higher numbers of out-of-spec parts. With no alternative technology, flexible ducting was used to cushion the pedestal mounted mist separator from the machine.  With the addition of flex ducting, another side affect was created - increased static pressure.  The centrifugal mist collector had to be run at a higher speed to maintain airflow through the flexible ducts.

Around the year 2000, an Iowa based industrial air cleaner manufacturer called Air Quality Engineering, developed an innovative smoke and mist collection alternative.  They took a filtration technology originally used in smoke stacks, and later smoke eaters, and adapted it to mist collection for a single machine center.  The end product was a mist eliminator the size of a microwave oven that would mount directly to the machine tool enclosure.  It used impingement to knock out large mist droplets and electrostatic precipitation to collect fine mist and smoke.  Small sized, low powered, self cleaning, easy to install, with minimal ducting, this format was instantly successful.

Other manufacturers now produce similar mist eliminators.  We currently have many available versions of this compact electrostatic oil mist eliminator on the market.  There are even a few that use media filtration instead of ESP.  Pedestals can still be used as a convenience where there is no room or support for direct enclosure installation.

A few centrifugal mist eliminators can still be found on the market, but they are being phased out by various versions of the compact electrostatic mist eliminators.
