Oil Mist Eliminators - Product Comparisons & Reviews

Industry expert reviews of oil mist eliminators
oil mist eliminator product comparisons from industrial equipment experts

Which Oil Mist Eliminators Can Solve Your Indoor Air Pollution?

The right oil mist eliminator, correctly installed, will prevent oil mist from entering the work environment.  Straight oil and water soluble cutting oil (or emulsifiable oil) used as metalworking fluids, can be sprayed, vaporized into mist and cause smoke during machining. These vaporized metal cutting fluids get everywhere. Oil mist alone, can be easy to address by using oil mist eliminators, though mist is usually accompanied by smoke.  Some coolant mist eliminators, such as centrifugal separators can only filter large particles of oil from the air, leaving fine mist and smoke to be filtered by a secondary type of air filtration.  Other oil smoke mist eliminators, if improperly chosen or installed, can only filter smoke, leaving oil mist and oil residue uncontrolled.  Learn More

Proper Oil Mist Eliminators Will Prevent Metalworking Fluid Pollution

by James Lee, Industrial Designer

Poor installation choice for oil mist eliminatorsEven though oil mist spreads evenly throughout a work area, ceiling mounted, ambient air cleaners are the least effective oil smoke mist eliminator option for reducing oil mist.  A ceiling mounted oil smoke or coolant mist eliminator may filter the smoke that rises, but mist will remain below the level of the mist eliminators.  The most effective way to reduce oil mist is to remove it at the source of contamination.  Most oil mist spews from machine center enclosures.  Using a mist eliminator vented or directly mounted to the enclosure pulls oil mist out of the enclosure before it can escape into the factory environment.

Concerns for choosing an oil mist eliminator should be primarily effectiveness of removing oil mist and smoke, balanced with associated costs.  If properly sized and maintained, any mist eliminator technology can be effective at removing oil mist - though costs vary.

The most obvious cost is that of ownership over the lifetime of the equipment.  Media mist eliminators require regularly costly filter replacements.  Cartridge is the most expensive form of replacement media.  Centrifugals require filter replacements, part replacements and complete rebuilds.

Next cost to consider is maintenance and hazardous waste disposal cost.  Ideally, your industrial air corrections equipment should perform metalworking fluid recycling and machinery fluid delivery of combustible oil or hazardous material. However, anything with media filters will require regular filter disposal.  Centrifugal mist eliminators typically require constant checking and maintenance (including filter disposale) to keep them spinning in balance.  Electrostatic precipitators, the cheapest to maintain will require running the collection cell through your parts washer about once a year.

The last major cost is your energy bill.  All mist eliminators use electricity to run a fan or blower that moves contaminated air through some form of filtration.  The more CFM the blower must move, the more electricity it will require.  Each machine process has its own airflow requirements to remove oil mist.  Besides that, there are a few other factors.  Ducting requires more power to pull the air through the ducts.  Distance and changes in duct direction increase your need for power.  Ducting issues can be eliminated by using directly mounted oil mist eliminators.  Another thing that overworks the fan motor is restrictive filtration.  Media filters cause static pressure which the fan most overcome in order to pull air through them.  As more contamination collects on the media filter, airflow becomes blocked, increasing static pressure.  Media based oil mist eliminators typically use the most electricity, while electrostatic oil mist eliminators use very little power.

In conclusion, direct machine mounted oil mist eliminators that use electrostatic precipitation are the most energy efficient and low maintenance pollution control available.
