Floor Placement Mist Eliminators Comparisons

The best way to treat your smoke, coolant and oil mist problem is with a mist eliminator directly mounted to your machine enclosure.  When direct mount is not feasible, a floor placed mist eliminator with minimal ducting works just as well, only adding a little static pressure for the blower or fan to overcome ducting.  Almost any machine mount mist eliminator can be adapted as a floor placement freestanding mist eliminator via a pedestal stand. More information

Floor Placement Installation for Mist Eliminators

by James Lee, Industrial Designer

There are several reasons for using a floor installed mist eliminators, though performance is not one of them.  Floor placement is the alternative to the more efficient direct mount installation.

Floor installation may be necessary for inferior constructed mist eliminators that shake or vibrate.  Centrifugal oil mist eliminators are frequently floor mounted because their spinning drums have a tendency to go out of balance and shake violently.  Media based coolant mist eliminators have a tendency to vibrate due to high fan speed needed to overcome high static pressure of media filtration. Flexible ducting can be used to isolate the oil smoke mist eliminator from your machine center.  On the downside, any ducting, especially flex ducting creates more static pressure, which means the fan must blow harder yet to maintain the required airflow for your application.  This creates more noise, vibration and higher electric cost.

The other reason we have floor mounted mist eliminators is to accommodate inconvenient size and weight.  Most media oil smoke mist eliminators become very heavy as their bag filters fill up with liquid and solid contaminants.  Media mist eliminators are usually bigger than ESP because they require multiple stages of filtration to refine polluted air into breathable air.  Size of each filter depends on its capacity.  A media oil mist eliminator usually will have an impingement pre-filter, followed by a large capacity bag filter, followed by one or several post filters.  These filters are stacked end to end and making one tall unit that can only be safely installed on the floor.

Electrostatic mist eliminators, though more efficient than media, can also come in huge multiple pass packages that are only feasible for floor installation.  Smaller electrostatic precipitators are usually machine mounted because they do not retain oil or coolant.  Metalworking fluids are constantly drained back into the machine center.  If a machine enclosure can not support a small ESP mist eliminator, it can easily mount to a floor stand.

When there is no floor space available, most mist eliminators can be suspended with hanging hardware or on a skid or platform.  Just remember, the further you run ducts, the higher the fan speed needed to overcome additional static pressure.  As ducting becomes more complex, so do the air handling calculations required to run them.  When possible, keep the mist eliminator close to the machine center for efficient operation.
