Cold Heading Pollution Control

Fine mist and heavy smoke pollution produced by a cold header is best controlled by means of machine mounted or ducted electrostatic precipitator mist eliminators.  Mechanical mist eliminator filters such as cartridges and bag filters are sometimes used in cold heading applications.  However, the oily, tacky contaminate will quickly blind the media, making replacement costs expensive and impractical over time.  Also, the particulate generated by cold headers is extremely fine and will pass through most new media.  Learn more

Mist Eliminators for Cold Headers

by James Lee, Industrial Designer

When using a cold header to make fasteners and other hardware, such aggressive pounding and deforming of cold metal requires a lot of lubricant.  As a result, generated heat turns most the machine coolant into heavy smoke plus some coolant mist vapor.  Since cold heading creates no metal chips, it is an ideal application for electrostatic precipitators (ESP), currently the most economical and efficient form of mist collection.  Due to the heavy amount of smoke created by cold heading, you will need an appropriate sized oil smoke mist eliminator with enough airflow to handle it.  Pollution control can work just as well using individual coolant mist eliminators, directly mounted or using one large coolant mist eliminator ducted to several cold headers.  For heavy loading, you definitely want a double-pass system.  Inspection and washing may be necessary as frequently as daily, or at most every few months.  The ideal centrally ducted oil mist eliminator system is one with a programmable, automatic wash component.  Manually cleaned ESP oil mist eliminators can be used successfully in cold heading operations.  When manually cleaned oil smoke mist eliminators are used, I recommend an extra set of ionizer-collector cells to minimize maintenance.  The extra cells can be rotated in a cleaning schedule. For effective smoke and mist removal, be sure to address all locations that generate particulate, including die, discharge chute, parts conveyor, storage bin and staging areas.  Properly sized and applied, ESP oil smoke mist eliminators will keep a cold heading facility well below the current 5 mg/m3 TLV adopted by OSHA and ACGIH,
