Airflow Systems Media Filter Approach

by James Lee, Industrial Designer

Airflow Systems Inc. has been in the industry for a long time and has a diverse product line, yet for some reason, from what I've seen, they only use filter media technology for smoke and oil mist eliminators.  When addressing metal cutting fluids mist, you should check Electrostatic precipitator mist eliminator options as well.  In many indoor oil, smoke and mist pollution applications, electrostatic precipitation can be very cost effective.

The fact that Airflow Systems stays away from centrifugal separators is a good thing, though air filtration media has its own limitations.  Because media filters collect contamination on a surface that impedes the airflow, the more loaded they become, the more airflow is blocked.  When media filters are new and clean, air flows through them easily.  As contamination builds up, it becomes increasingly difficult for air to flow through.  This is called static pressure.  The static pressure varies throughout the life of the filter making effectiveness and efficiency vary.  Airflow starts very high, but gradually and steadily decreases until no air is able to blow through, putting the fan motor under tremendous stress.  To compensate for static pressure, high CFM fans are used.  If the blower has a variable fan speed control, you will have to constantly monitor and adjust it as static pressure builds.

Electrostatic precipitators use ionization to collect contaminants and drain coolant back into the machine coolant reservoir.  They cause almost no static pressure and thusly require only a low CFM blower.  Manufacturers who make electrostatic mist eliminators include AQE, Trion and United Air Specialists.

The upside for media is its versatility.  Airflow Systems can safely address just about any application using mechanical media based coolant mist eliminators.  For a few abrasive or ferrous applications, media is absolutely necessary.  For more help finding the best technology for your application, use the contact button above.
